October 25 - The children visited Home - The Old Courthouse for the Fell Farming and Heritage Week in Shap. Janet Wood talked to the children about the things they would find in farm house kitchen 70 years ago. They looked at the farmhouse books and noted how computer now help, enormously, with accounts. They looked at the poses tub and dolly and noted how much less work a washing machine is.
We talked about the kettles and pots being made of iron so they could be heated on the stove fuelled by coal. The shepherd's crooks were made of wood and sheep horns. It was interesting to look at photographs of sheep farming, in years gone by.

September 25 - The class had a great time visiting Easegill Head Farm. They watched Farmer Andrew round up the sheep with Sue (the sheep dog), fed the belted tups and blacknose sheep, collected eggs and leaned about how farm machinery can help make jobs easier. They discovered the importance of livestock farming and 'farm to fork' within our community. They began to understand how sheep and sustainable farming help maintain the open grassy fells and maintain healthy landscapes for the future. They saw how wilding areas within the farm support biodiversity, creating varied habitats for wildlife in meadows and in the newly planted trees.![]()
