June 23 - Spirituality

A song thrush made a nest at the top of the shelves in our outdoor area, she laid 3 eggs which hatched. The children were fascinated watching the mummy swoop over their heads and loved listening out for the chicks cheeping.

Unfortunately, after a few weeks, whilst playing outside, the children rushed in to tell me that one of the chicks was lying dead on the ground. They were of course extremely concerned, we talked about what we should do. They decided that it would need to be buried and thought the class wild flower area would be a good place. They suggested a cross was made of twigs and ribbon and then one child asked if he could say a prayer;

"Dear God, please look after the chick in heaven. Amen"

It was a really beautiful moment, we were all touched by mutual feelings of compassion and concern. The children had such collaborative and thoughtful ideas.
