Art - Shadow Sculptures
To link with our sculpture work in art and our light work in Science, we based our Christmas cards on shadow sculptures.
We looked at the artist Sokari Douglas Camp. She is a sculptor whose works are influenced by her Nigerian background and often include a political message. Many of her sculptures are made from welded metals, found objects and reused waste materials. We spent a long time as a class looking at and talking about the following piece of work 'All the World is Now Richer - Memorial Proposal, 2012 by Sokari Douglas Camp'.
We then thought about how we could take her artwork to inspire our own. We had to consider the effect of how our sculpture would be displayed. We explored words associated with the Christmas story and then experimented with different styles of lettering. Once we were happy, we drew our lettering onto black pieces of card and then cut them out.
We finally worked together to photograph our work, as someone needed to hold the light source, one or two needed to hold the lettering and finally someone had to take the photo.
Everyone that received the card was impressed by the artwork and the effect they created.
