D&T - Electrical Systems - Making circuits

To introduce the unit of work, we explored the classroom to identify electrical products. We soon realised that electricity can come through the mains or from batteries. We discussed what electrical products we had already used that morning and thought about what people would have done years ago without electricity and how their life would have been different.

We then investigated and made a working circuit in teams to light up a bulb. We made all the components and talked about where the electricity was stored and how it would travel around the circuit. We then investigated how to make a switch, so we could turn the bulb on or off. Some children were quick to realise to turn the bulb off, we had to stop the flow of electricity by causing a break in the circuit. We did this by using split pins and a paper clip.
