STEM Day at Lowther Primary School
Children from our school shared a STEM day with children from Lowther Primary School.
In the morning, we worked alongside the Year 3 and 4 children from Lowther in workshop delivered by Hyett Education. During the session, we used Lego to make submarines in pairs, before using the ipads to programme our submarines to move along different pathways. We had to think about our accuracy and how we needed to change our algorithms if it didn't follow the oath accurately. We also added sensors to our submarines which started our robots moving when a specific colours was flashed in front of the sensor. We certainly have some budding programmers in the class. We then feedback to the class to share our solutions, problems and if we had longer on the task what we would do differently next time.
In the afternoon, we worked in small groups on a designing and engineering task. We were set the challenge to help 82-year-old Tom, who struggled to button up his shirt due to arthritis. As a team, we designed and made something we thought Tom would be able to use successfully to fasten his buttons. We soon realised our first ideas and designs didn't work so we had to reassess and change our ideas.
